Considerations for Lower Posterior Restorations |
The Curve of Spee can cause challenging draw situations when preparing single and multiple unit spans in the lower posterior regions. Often the margins of the preparation are wider than the contacts, forcing the laboratory to deviate from normal and correct interproximal contours. The technician’s options may be limited to creating a lingual or buccal path of insertion with only "point" contacts at the marginal ridge. Additionally, large concave areas under the contacts may have to be left to facilitate draw. These interproximal voids can easily become unwanted food traps. If you have a pronounced curve of spee this condition probably exists. Therefore, when necessary, you must plan ahead and create proper draw before impressioning.

If the over-all mesio-distal dimension of the margins of your single unit or span is wider than your contacts, then recontour, smooth and polish the adjacent contacts before impressioning to assure the completed restoration has proper draw, proper contour, proper contacts, no food traps, and is easy to seat.
